Together for plant heath: meet CITRUSBUSTERS’ sister initiatives

30th October, 2025

Protecting European agriculture from pests, diseases, soil degradation and climate pressure requires more than one project. It takes a coordinated ecosystem of innovation. Alongside CITRUSBUSTERS, several Horizon Europe projects are advancing sustainable plant protection, biocontrol, and circular agricultural practices.

Here is an overview of other four sister initiatives helping shape a more resilient and sustainable agri-food system. To discover other related initiatives, check our previous article.

AGRO4AGRI – Smart nutrition and protection for sustainable crop management

AGRO4AGRI is developing nano- and biotechnology-based fertilizers and biopesticides to make crop nutrition and protection more efficient and environmentally friendly. Its goal is to:

  • Reduce nutrient overuse and increase fertiliser efficiency
  • Cut pesticide use by 50% through targeted, biodegradable biopesticides
  • Address soil degradation and water contamination
  • Provide farmers with practical digital tools to apply innovations in the field

BIOBIVE – Controlled-release biocontrol for healthier crops

BIOBIVE focuses on controlled-release bio-active agents to tackle diseases in tomato, carrot, and strawberry crops. Through advanced encapsulation and biopolymer technologies, BIOBIVE aims to:

  • Reduce chemical pesticide reliance
  • Deliver natural compounds in a precise, efficient way
  • Improve soil biodiversity and reduce environmental pressure
  • Support rural communities with safer, more sustainable solutions

PHAntastic – Biodegradable materials for soil health and circular agriculture

PHAntastic rethinks agriculture’s dependency on plastics by producing biodegradable mulch films and growing media made from polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). These materials also incorporate bio-stimulants to enrich soil health.

The project targets:

  • A significant reduction in agrochemical inputs
  • Prevention of microplastics accumulation in soil
  • Valorisation of agricultural by-products in a circular bioeconomy
  • New materials that improve soil biodiversity and reduce farm costs

VINNY – Biopesticides and biofertilisers for sustainable viticulture

VINNY tackles one of Europe’s most valuable and vulnerable sectors: viticulture. The project develops nano-formulated biopesticides, biofertilisers, and smart agricultural textiles, all derived from grapevine by-products.

Its objectives include:

  • Reducing chemical pesticide dependence
  • Strengthening soil health through targeted biofertilisers
  • Applying circular economy principles in vineyards
  • Testing solutions across real European vineyards
